Mac (Reid) is a wealthy, workaholic middle-aged black record promotor, living in the suburbs of Richmond, Virigina, and looked after by his housekeeper Hardy (Lepart). When Hardy's inner-city, 18-year-old niece CeCe (Curry) gets into serious trouble, Hardy and Mac ask for leniency from the judge and Mac is expected to keep CeCe on the straight and narrow. But there's a generation clash since CeCe thinks Mac is a sellout and Mac thinks CeCe is a punk with a fatalistic attitude. But CeCe's opportunities may be threatened by her own insecurities and her narrow notions of what being "real" mean, while Mac has to learn to loosen up.
