Manuel Jordan (Thornton) has just been released from prison after serving 22 years of a life sentence for killing a clerk during a botched robbery. He returns to his neighborhood, looking for, but not expecting to find redemption. What he finds is a job working at a community center run by a fire-and-brimstone preacher, possible romance with the sister (Hunter) of his victim, her troubled son, and a self-destructive club kid, along with the wish to protect them all from contrived coincidences and overwrought sentimentality. Soloman was going for mood and atmospheric, and while it is moody (and crushingly boring), it's not very atmospheric. What it is is a complete waste of a talented cast.
