According to Douglas and Brooks this isn't really a remake of the 1979 Peter Falk/Alan Arkin comedy. They're right. That one was funny. Douglas is the groom's (Reynolds) dad, a CIA operative on the trail of a French weapons dealer and Brooks is the bride's neurotic podiatrist pop, who's shanghaied for the mission and becomes the object of the bad guy's affections. The tedious script avoids laughter at every turn, while Brooks and Douglas never seem to click as a comic duo. Bergen is amusing in her too few scenes as Douglas's New Age ex, while Reynolds does well with what little he's given to do.
