Ten-year-old John John (Craft) is living with a lot of tension in 1968. His good ol' boy dad (Travis) is abusive and angry at the changes going on around him, especially the fact that his wife (Rosemont) wants to take her kid and flee to San Francisco to join a commune. And John John also doesn't know how to deal with the unwanted friendship of the disabled Zeola (Schwimmer). Title comes from the boy's dream to build his own airplane. Sometimes confusing story with its series of flashbacks and flash-forwards.
