Writer Betty (Kiberlain) has recently returned to Paris after separating from her lover. She is uneasily waiting for the arrival of her mother Margot (Garcia), a disturbed woman who abused Betty as a child. Betty's own young son Joseph (Setbon) suddenly dies in an accidental fall and she suffers a breakdown. Jose (Chatrian) is the abused young son of single mother Carole (Seigner).
