Based on a short story by Truman Capote and set in small Medda, Alabama in 1947, which is where 13-year-old Billy Bob Murphy (Pichler) lives with his widowed mother Elinore (Lee). His best bud is Preacher (Plemons) but the two are soon vying for the affections of the new girl in town--Lilly Jane Bobbit (Raymonde). Meanwhile, romance is in the air for Elinore and sheriff/mechanic Speedy (McDonald) to Billy Bob's dismay. And there's even more excitement over the shady dealings of smooth-talking Lionel Quince (Arnold).
