Patric is Det. Nick Tellis, an undercover narcotics cop on suspension for a bust that went tragically wrong. He seeks a desk job, but the suits want him to investigate the murder of another undercover cop. He's teamed with the deceased's former partner, Henry Oak (Liotta), who's out to nail the killers, procedures be damned, although his motives may be more than just revenge. As the investigation continues, and the dead end leads mount, the tension and suspense become palpable. Carnahan's tale is brutal, dark, and full of dread, but it is always gripping, and he uses cop drama conventions to great effect. Both Patric and Liotta take well to their roles, with Patric embodying Nick's tortured cop looking for redemption and Liotta swallowing scenes whole with Oak's barely (and sometimes unsuccessfully) suppressed rage.
