Director McGrath reliably takes on another period piece with this sprawling Dickens classic, which he nicely condenses for mass consumption. Nicholas (Hunnam) is a 19 year-old in England forced to grow up quickly when his father dies and he takes over as head of the family. Well acted, with Hunnam able but not outstanding in an overall light-hearted and lively production.
