Devon Miles, (Cannon), a hip-hop drummer from Harlem, receives a full music scholarship to the fictitious Atlanta A&T University. Although his hotdogging antics brought him recognition at home, they aren't appreciated by bandleader Dr. Lee, who's philosophy is "one band, one sound." The university president is aching for more showmanship during halftime and supports Devon's hot-shot performing. This, along with Devon's wisecracking attitude, grates on section-leader and rival Sean, (Roberts). Stone does well dealing with ethnic issues without falling into character cliches and stereotypes, but with so many issues explored, some ideas go undeveloped. Good story is helped along by the flair and power of the marching band scenes.
