Tavernier beautifully tells the true story of French filmmakers during the Nazi occupation of WWII. Follows the stories of Jean Devaivre, an assistant director who rises to become a feature director while trying to inject some personal view into his films, and writer Jean Aurenche, who refuses to work for the German-controlled studio. Important, but generally overlooked, part of French film history is beautifully told, directed, and acted.
