Using the world of hip-hop music as its background, this romantic comedy succeeds in breathing life into a rather tired formula. Record producer Dre (Diggs) and music journalist Sidney (Lathan) are childhood friends who are drawn together by their shared love of the music. Although they think that romance is out of the question for them, everyone else knows that they're wrong, especially Sidney's friend Francine (Latifah). Unfortunately, Sidney doesn't figure it out until Dre becomes engaged to lovely lawyer Reese (Parker). She rebounds with suave basketball player Kelby (Kodjoe). Mos Def steals scenes as the shy, rapping cabbie who has a crush on Francine.
