Joshua (Goldwyn) is a stranger to the 19th-century midwestern community of Auburn. He rents a barn and sets himself up as a woodworker and all-around helpful guy. Seeing that the black community's church is damaged, Joshua sets out to rebuild it and soon has the entire town pitching in to help. But traditionalist priest Father Tardone (Abraham) is askance when townsfolk begin to think Joshua has miraculous powers. Spiritually uplifting without being preachy; based on the novel by Father Joseph Girzone.
