Smalltime crooks Jimmy (Nesbitt) and Rudy (James) wind up in the same prison after a bank job gone wrong. Eccentric prison governor Mortimer (Plummer) loves musicals and has written one of his own. Jimmy encourages Mortimer to let the prisoners stage his opus and plans an escape attempt during the performance. Film gets schzoid with comic rehearsals, a tentative romance between Jimmy and support worker Annabel (Williams), a suicide, and the confusing prison break.
