Set in 1955 and based on a true story. 11-year-old Charlie (Edner) lives in a small farming community with his widowed father Charles (Perlman). His best friend is his golden retriever Drum, who was trained by his late mother to protect the boy. The duo's problems lie with his surly maternal Uncle Lon (Schuck), who dislikes the dog and says Drum is a sheep-killer. Lon shoots the dog for being on his property and the sheriff sends poor Drum to the pound before his case goes to court. Charlie and his father enlist the services of lawyer George Graham Vest (Bakula) and Drum's trial is both humorous and touching.
