Dark and logy religious thriller stars a dour and underwhelming Ledger as Alex, a Catholic priest investigating the death of his mentor (Carnelutti). His sleuthing eventually leads to a character known as a "Sin Eater" (Furmann), who literally ingests a wide range of normally unforgivable sins. These sins are represented by creatures similar to those in "Alien," as they also come bursting out of the chests of the unfortunate, but soon to be forgiven, souls. Upbeat subplot involves Alex's roll in the hay with a mentally deranged girl (Sossamon) who once attempted to kill him. What this poor man's "Exorcist" lacks in action, sufficient pacing, and a believable story line, it more than makes up for in gloomy lethargy, heavy-handed dialogue, loopy plotting, and humorless characters.
