Based on the 1875 novel by Anthony Trollope, this adaptation centers around shady financier Augustus Melmotte (Suchet). An economic boom is sweeping through Europe in the 1870s and Melmotte arrives in London with a scheme to buy himself a place in Victorian society. Melmotte is even willing to sacrifice his daughter Marie (Henderson) who has developed an infatuation for debt-ridden but aristocratic Sir Felix Carbury (Macfadyen). The question for all this greedy bunch is who will get the better of whom?
