Collected Stories Movie Review 2002

Fine two-character study based on the 1997 play by Margulies, who adapted for this PBS presentation. Ruth Steiner (Lanvin) is a respected writer and teacher in her mid-50s who lives comfortably in her Greenwich Village apartment. It's there that Ruth agrees that ambitious graduate student and aspiring writer Lisa Morrison (Mathis) will become her assistant. Over six years, their relationship evolves into a friendship, which Lisa betrays when she turns the scandalous details of Ruth's life into a best-selling novel.
