In St. Petersburg in 1866, Russian writer Dostoyevsky (Gambon) is a middle-aged compulsive gambler who is currently indebted to his publisher Stellovsky (Jansen) and must now write a new novel in 27 days to pay him off. He hires poverty-stricken Anna (May) to be his secretary and the dictated novel turns out to be the story of a gambling couple who are trying to get out of hock at a German resort. The real and fictional intertwine as Anna becomes more and more protective of Dostoyevsky and is determined to help him succeed.
