Michael Sullivan (Hanks) is a Depression-era hitman who must take his teenage son Michael Jr. (Hoechlin) on the run as he seeks revenge on the people who betrayed him and killed his wife and youngest son. Dark, atmospheric tale excels on the strength of the brilliantly understated screenplay and outstanding performances, highlighted by Hanks's tormented hitman/father and Newman's conflicted mob boss. Based on the 1998 graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner.
