In 1977, shortly after the Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment, convicted murderer Gary Gilmore (Koteas) requested execution by a Utah firing squad, becoming the first person executed in a decade. But Gilmore's brothers, Frank Jr. (Tergesen), and his younger brother, writer Mikal (Ribisi), come to Draper Prison to plead with him to change his mind. Alienated for years, the brothers' uneasy reunion brings up lots of twisted family memories. Haunting movie about internal demons and brotherly ties; based on Mikal's 1994 memoir of the same name.
