Clooney makes his directorial debut in this uneven but ultimately enjoyable biopic of TV game show producer Chuck Barris (Rockwell), who claimed in his "unauthorized" biography to be a CIA assassin during the height of his success. Clooney sometimes gets a little self-consciously "arty," but doesn't go overboard, and it actually fits with the absurdist tone of Kaufman's script. It's Rockwell who stands out here, with a breakout performance that showcases his range.
