A blood feud between two families nearly destroys them both in Salles' adaptation of Ismail Kadare's novel, which the director relocated to Brazil in 1910. The Ferreiras and the Breveses are both sugarcane planters determined to protect their honor if nothing else. Tonho Breves (Santoro) is expected to avenge the death of his older brother at the hands of the Ferreiras.
