Reynolds is oddly cast but very effective as Eli, a Jewish shopkeeper who is shot by a young would-be robber, Thaniel (Dye). To protect him from prosecution, Thaniel's mother, Tyree (Grace), whisks her son and Eli to her childhood home in Waterproof, Louisiana. She's been away for 15 years and finds a great deal of tension with her family, but they are willing to take Tyree and Thaniel in to assist them. The film examines the struggles that exist between family members and individuals from differing ethnic backgrounds. Without becoming overwrought, the film delivers positive message while being entertaining. Special kudos to Jones, who overcomes his comic reputation by portraying a man with severe brain damage.
