Underwhelming teen buddy road pic has pop tart Spears debut as Lucy, a virginal, small-town high school senior who hits the road to L.A. with childhood buds Kit (Saldana) and Mimi (Manning), with depressing results. Lucy's searching for her real mom (Cattrall); Kit, a no-good boyfriend; and Mimi trying to get to an open audition as a singer. Convenient cute love interest for Lucy is driver Ben (Mount), who may harbor a dangerous secret. Most laughable scene features Lucy scribbling "poetry" (actually lyrics to one of her soundtrack songs) while Ben "composes" the music for it. Spears is likeable and harmless while Manning is the real stand-out. One notch up from "Glitter," quality competed with quantity (of wardrobe) as lowest priority.
