When her British fiance stands her up at the airport, Russian single mom Tanya (Korzun) and her son Artiom (Strelnikov) are thrown into the Immigration system. Left with no option but to request asylum, Tanya and Artiom are sent to a former resort town that's become a "refugee holding area" for immigrants in limbo. Amid the decaying, shuttered amusements and bleak housing projects, she is forced to find work in the Internet porn industry before befriending an arcade manager (Considine) who helps her find hope. Pawlikowski's story, while bleak, is not without its tender, funny, and even uplifting moments, but it doesn't forget to keep the desperation of the characters' problems right at the surface. Images both stark and stunning propel the story thanks to cinematographer Lenczewski.
