Supernatural thriller based on true events occurring in Point Pleasant, WV, in the mid-1960s. John and Mary Klein (Gere and Messing) are happily married, until a car crash with a moth-like creature only seen by Mary, who later dies, but not before making some preliminary sketches of the insect-like beast. John, a "Washington Post" reporter, mysteriously ends up in the town of Point Pleasant, where things get weird. The town, which is actually far from pleasant, boasts cop Connie (Linney) the sole voice of reason in the superstitious bunch of locals, some of whom have seen the same creature Mary did, and John and Connie team to solve the Mothman mystery. Gere and Linney are fine actors wasted in this ho-hum story. Movie does have an aptly creepy tone, however, and Bates is good as the hermit-ish psychic phenomena expert.
