The Personals Movie Review 1998

Fed up with her boring love life, Dr. Du Jia-zhen (Liu) takes out a personal ad and gets 100 responses. The body of the film is made up of the interviews she conducts with these men--well, most of them are men. Other filmmakers have made more of the same premise, but director Kuo-fu Chen keeps his camera squarely on his characters. The Taiwan setting is a bit exotic. Liu's performance is a model of restraint. Mandarin with subtitles.
