Near the end of WWII, two officers the fictional intelligence compound called "Treasure Island" are given a dead body and a covert assignment: construct a fake "backstory," including made-up letters to girlfriends, family members, etc., and fill the body's pockets with information. When dumped in the ocean, it is hoped that the false information will send the Japanese in the wrong direction. The two officers find themselves consumed by visions of the body, which seems to show up everywhere, including invading their (quite unusual) sex lives. Challenging and ambitious puzzle of a film which is filled from sprocket hole to sprocket hole with coded messages, encrypted dialogue, and implied meanings. Certainly not for all audiences, but a funny and fascinating exercise in style and cinematic invention. The basics of the story are simple and easy to follow, but the female characters (and their relationship to our protagonists) are a bit muddled. In a '40s period style, the film begins with a brief serial and newsreel that are absolutely perfect.
