In 1927 Russia, young Jewish Fegele is separated from her father (who manages to emigrate to America) and instead winds up in England, where she's adopted and renamed Suzie. An adult Suzie (Ricci) heads to Paris in the late '30s and finds bit work in an opera company, sharing a garret with gold-digging Russian Lola (a lively Blanchett) and a romance with gypsy Cesar (Depp). Lola has set her sights on hammy opera singer, Dante (Turturro). Then the Nazis invade Paris. The film's surprisingly plodding and the characters either stereotypical and/or underwritten.
