Stuttering, 7-year-old Liam (Borrows) is an Irish Catholic living in Liverpool in the 1930s. His hardworking mother is determined that Liam will look presentable for his first Communion no matter what the sacrifice but his family's struggles worsen when his father (Hart) loses his job and becomes increasingly bitter, blaming his woes on others and turning to violence as a solution.
