In 1943, the inhabitants of an unnamed Czechoslovakian town are existing under the Nazi occupation. Josef (Polivka) recognizes his former employer David (Kassai), a Jew who has escaped the camps. Josef and his wife Marie (Siskova) agree to hide David in their home although they are under the scrutiny of Nazi collaborator Horst (Dusek), who keeps making passes at Marie. Although they are childless, Marie claims to be pregnant to get Horst to leave her alone. Which leads Josef to ask a delicate favor of David so they can make good on Marie's lie.
