The Hughes brothers take on the legend of Jack the Ripper in this grisly period thriller. Inspector Abberline (Depp) is the fictional opium-addled detective charged with finding the notorious killer of London's ladies of the night in 1888. With the help of his police sidekick Godley (Coltrane) and the cockney hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold Mary (Graham), Abberline pries into the medical community, the royal family and other less respectable areas in his search for the Ripper. Beautiful visuals and taut suspense raise this effort a notch above other adaptions of the material. Based on a graphic novel (a.k.a. fancy-schmancy comic book) by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell.
