Creator-star Mitchell adapted and directed his Off Broadway stage rock musical along with composer-lyricist Trask (who's also in the film) and opened up his gender-bending '70s kitsch fantasy. Hedwig was once Hansel, an East Berlin boy, whose sex-change operation was botched and who was abandoned in a Kansas trailer park by her G.I. husband. Betrayed in love by teenaged boy toy Tommy (Pitt), who also steals Hedwig's songs, Hedwig and her band embark on a low-rent tour while Hedwig sings her life story to the disinterested and stalks a much-more successful Tommy.
