Elizabeth Barney (Rashad) is middleaged and has never been married, thus making her an old settler according to sister Quilly (Allen). Quilly has been abandoned by her husband and is living with Elizabeth in her Harlem apartment because times are hard. In fact to make a little extra cash, Elizabeth rents a room to handsome country boy Husband Witherspoon (Robinson), fresh off the bus from South Carolina. Eventually Husband, who's been disappointed in love, turns his attentions to Elizabeth, much to the bitter Quilly's astonishment. Based on the play by John Henry Redwood.
