Twisting Gothic haunt-fest centers on Grace (Kidman) and her two children Anne (Mann) and Nicholas (Bentley), living in a mansion on Britain's remote Isle of Jersey. She waits for her husband's return from WWII, although she fears he may be dead. After her servants disappear in the middle of the night, she's surprised when a trio of domestics show up, claiming to have worked in the house before. They're hired on the spot, but the help soon discovers why their predecessors took off. Grace is demanding and high-strung to the point of mania. Because of rare allergies, the kids must be kept out of the sunlight. Maybe the solitude is preying on Grace's mind, maybe she's crazy, or maybe their house is haunted. Kidman is at her chilly best as the audience is kept guessing.
