Tender adaptation of Vacarro's play "And the Home of the Brave" finds 11-year-old Opal Miller (Vega) and her mother Ruby (Whalley) struggling to manage their small North Carolina farm while Opal's dad serves overseas during WWII. Ruby is grateful for the help of drifter Tom (Flanery), though others are suspicious of the young man, but complications arise when the adults develop stronger feelings for one another.
