Frank Herbert's 1965 sci-fi classic was previously made into a disappointing 1984 film by David Lynch. This miniseries more successfully combines visuals with character, although the complicated plot is still somewhat overwhelming. Duke Leto (Hurt) of the House of Atreides has been appointed by the Emperor to harvest and export Spice--the most prized commodity on the desert planet of Arrakis (or Dune). But a rival faction, led by Baron Harkonnen (McNeice), causes trouble for Atreides and his heir, Paul (Newman), who must look to Dune's native inhabitants for support.
