Based on the book and the Broadway play that looks at life through the aging eyes of the black Delany sisters: 103-year-old Sadie (Carroll) and 101-year-old Bessie (Dee). They share their experiences with New York Times reporter Amy Hill Hearth (Madigan), who has come to interview them in 1991. Their father was born a slave but all 12 of the Delany children graduated from college, with Bessie becoming a teacher and Sadie a dentist in Harlem. (The real Bessie died in 1995 and Sadie in 1999.)
