The real subject of HBO's hit series is New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano (Gandolfini) and the women in his life: wife Carmela (Falco), shrink Dr. Melfi (Bracco), teenage daughter Meadow (Sisler) and, most of all, mother Livia (Marchand), an aging half-mad matriarch whose sole purpose in life is to bring trouble to those around her. Not that Tony needs more trouble. The show has been roundly condemned for its graphic violence and refusal to apply conventional morality to these characters. Meanwhile, audiences love it, and more will discover it on home video.
