In the 1940s and 1950s, El Barrio--a neighborhood of New Yorkers of Puerto Rican heritage--was a community that taught and valued respect for elders, discipline, religious beliefs, and mutual support. Now the community is deteriorating via violence, drugs, breakdown of the family, and the need for instant gratification.
