After the State of Massachusetts enacted a law to establish the rights of gay and lesbian high schools students, the citizens of Westhampton were divided. Supporters opined that dropout and suicide rates would soar if gay and lesbian students were not more fully accepted; whereas opponents questioned the morality of this issue and voiced concerns about introducing a "gay curriculum."
