On the eve of his death at age 82 in 1828, Spanish artist Fracisco De Goya Lucientes (Rabal), living in political exile in France, remembers the wild creative days of his youth, particularly his passionate affair with the Duchess of Alba (Verdu), his struggles as a court painter to King Charles of Spain, and the deafness that afflicted him from the age of 46. This is a lavish production, filled with sumptuous sets and costumes. It's also a fairly standard bio-pic that settles back on cliches in the second half.
