Amanda (Beals) is the beloved only child of wealthy Georgia plantation owner David Dickson (Waterson) and is named as his heir when her father dies. But when Dickson's estranged brother (White) contests the will, family secrets come to light, includig the devastating fact that Amanda's real mother is Julia (Hamilton), who was one of Dickson's slaves. And although it may be 1874, race is still definitely an issue. Based on a true court case described in the book "Woman of Color, Daughter of Privilege" by Kent Anderson Leslie.
