Stallone is Las Vegas tough guy Jack Carter, who goes home to Seattle for his brother's funeral and decides that his death wasn't natural. Hoping to redeem himself in the eyes of sister-in-law Gloria (Richardson) and niece Doreen (Cook), Carter searches the seedy underbelly for the killers. Or he may be searching for some decent lighting, since most of the scenes are dark even for a seedy underbelly. His injury-inducing tour of the underworld leads him to a sleazy pornographer (Roarke) and whiny billionaire (Cumming), setting the stage for a climactic showdown involving Doreen. Remake fails because Stallone's catalog of cinematic carnage waters down the feeling of nihilistic violence of the original 1971 Brit thriller. Michael Caine (who had the original title role) makes an appearance as a wily bar owner.
