Black coach Herman Boone (Washington) is hired to lead the football team at racially tense T. C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, a school that has been forced to integrate in 1971. This forces white coach Bill Yoast (Patton), who was close to reaching an important milestone, into the role of assistant. He and his former players almost sit out the season, but decide warily to show up for the first practices. The team works through initial stages of mistrust and ignorance, but finally learn to work together. As the school year begins, racial tensions are eased by the success of the team, and the unified team goes to the state championship. A bit predictable and cliche-ridden, but heartfelt. Based on a true story.
