Gere stars as Dr. Sullivan Travis, a charming and sensitive gynecologist to the affluent women of Dallas, Texas. Yet despite his respect for and adoration of the women in his life, Dr. T, as he is known, cannot truly fathom their complexity. And none are more baffling to him than those closest to him--his wife (Fawcett), who is slowly descending into mental illness, and his daughters (Hudson and Reid). Director Altman has set his sights on ordinary human weaknesses and shortcomings here, staying away from the social commentary and cynicism of some of his earlier films, and often hits his target with a sweet and humorous note. Gere's charm and mannerisms fit the doctor to a "T," while Dern, Hunt, and Long put in good performances as well. Screenwriter Ann Rapp also collaborated with Altman on his previous film, "Cookie's Fortune."
