In the 19th century, the government sent suspected lepers to the island of Molokai in an effort to stop the spread of infection. The inhabitants were dependant on the efforts of the church to ease their suffering. Father Damien (Wenham) volunteers to go to the island to provide spiritual and physical comfort and care, even at the risk of contracting the disease himself. Based on a true story.
