Hamfisted western based on Will James' novel "The Lone Cowboy" and previously filmed in 1934. Clay Lomax (Peck) gets out a prison and wants revenge on the partner, Sam Foley (Gregory), who doublecrossed him. So Foley hires a young gunslinger (Lyons) to take care of Lomax. In addition, Lomax gets stuck with an orphaned 8-year-old girl, who's the daughter of an ex-lover (and may be Lomax's flesh-and-blood). Peck's just too nice while Lyons chews all the scenery.
