The Jewish Bober family have escaped the anti-Semitism of their homeland and emigrated to the U.S. where they are struggling to run a small grocery store during the depression. Drifter Frank (Bellows) hooks up with thief Ward (Woolvet) and they rob the store, with Ward attacking Morris Bober (Mueller-Stahl). A guilty Frank later returns and offers to help out. Morris doesn't know Frank was part of the robbery and agrees and Frank soons falls for the Bober's daughter, Helen (Greenhouse). Then Morris discovers the truth. Based on a novel by Bernard Malamud.
