It's actually not much of a mystery but writer Rex Stout's eccentric Wolfe (Chaykin) and his idiosyncratic cast of helpers as well as the setting (Manhattan in the late '40s) make for some amusing moments. Gourmand and orchid grower Wolfe never leaves his brownstone, preferring right-hand man Archie Goodwin (Hutton) take care of the leg work. The golden spiders of the title are a pair of flashy earrings worn by a damsel in distress that leads to several hit-and-run deaths, blackmail, and fraud.
